Though it stretches our idea of ‘Liverpool city region’ to its absolute maximum (it’s in Cheshire, and part of Manchester University, but we’ll let that slide), we love that Jodrell Bank – internationally renowned astrophysics hub – is within spitting distance. Or at least a short drive. It’s the closest thing to sci-fi we’ve got around here, apart from *insert something disparaging about a local Councillor here*.
Today it’s been announced that Jodrell Bank will host it’s first ever festival, Bluedot, and the lineup’s nuts. They’ve found the most fitting acts they could to play a discovery centre like this – back-on-form British legends Underworld will play, as well as nerdy space-age geeks Public Service Broadcasting, down-the-road quirk-pop gang Everything Everything and Caribou, too. But best of all, headlining, is the one and only Jean Michel-Jarre, whose shimmering synth epics will sound unbelievable in a space like that. Mercury Rev, 65daysofstatic and British Sea Power also play. Wowzers. Liverpool is represented by local’uns Stealing Sheep and The Vryll Society.
In addition, The Infinite Monkey Cage with Prof. Brian Cox and Robin Ince will be answering science’s biggest questions in their own inimitable style. A pretty brilliant way to kick off your summer.
