Chester based Totem Games might be working towards keeping Liverpool’s digital community focused on the future, but their retro-tastic new game is undeniably a loving look back at the past, too.

“We’re a tiny and independently funded game developer,” Totem’s Jill Cavanagh tells SevenStreets.”We were founded by my husband Matt, who used to be a lead designer for Bizarre Creations in Liverpool before they closed last year.

“Rather than following jobs elsewhere, Matt made the decision to set up for himself and has been working on a couple of games for the iPhone, the first of which – SpaceOff – has just been released.”

“SpaceOff has been a single man project so Matt has implemented every aspect of the game, while I’ve been building the website. We have been supporting the North Liverpool Academy with their new course aimed at video games and the digital sector by helping with their ‘I love gaming’ event last month. We have also been active in the ‘Indie Showcase’ events.

In SpaceOff, two players fight it out in intense head-to-head battles (think ‘Asteroids’ meets ‘Pong’ in space and you’re close). Two players-one phone games are, we have to admit, the only thing to turn to when the conversation about the Mayoral campaign dries up in the pub (although we’d hate to play Tap Tap Revenge with Joe Anderson. We doubt our crystal glass screens could take it).

It’s available at the itunes app store for £1.99

We’ve got four free promo codes up for grabs. Email us at info@sevenstreets.com if you want one!

i had an LED double ended space invaders hand held game in the early 80’s which was obviously the inspiration. unfortunately i took it apart and broke it and had to hide it in the airing cupboard so my parents didn’t find out.
