Merrill Garbus’ work as Tune-Yards (or the excruciatingly irritating ‘tUnE-yArDs’, as it’s usually stylised) gleefully defies pigeonholing: equal parts hip hop, Afropop, punk and folk, it’s a head-spinningly brilliant concoction that serves to highlight Garbus’ knack for a gleeful pop hook. Her primal, thumping instrumentation is actually deceptively complex and clever, and coupled with Garbus’ yelpy chants it’s a really rather euphoric ‘combo’. We’re rather excited at her rocking up to the Cathedral this spring, courtesy of always-ace local promoters Harvest Sun.
