Before the public galleries of the Conservation Centre closed they hosted a fantastic series of photography exhibitions, offering glimpses of Liverpool’s past. This photo was a highlight of one of my favourite of those exhibitions, The Long Way Home by Bernard Fallon.

As the title suggests, the photos were taken when Bernard was exploring the changing city on his way home from Liverpool College of Art, where he studied in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

His curiosity and passion for documenting the urban landscape evolved into his final-year assignment and then a career in photojournalism.

Bernard says he was drawn to this scene by the magical effect of the dust from a grain elevator caught in beams of sunlight, as well as the massive mug that the contented bargeman was drinking his cuppa from.
