Radar: In Conversation with Paul McGann

Hear Paul McGann discuss his life and career - and his favourite songs at St George's Hall next year.

Paul McGann is not a man known for courting the limelight. Even as a Doctor Who he’s arguably not a household name – or face – in the UK, despite a string of acclaimed television appearances over the last 25 years, a coveted spot as one of a select few actors in the world’s longest-running sci-fi TV series, owning one of the most recongisable voices on television and boasting some genuine highlights in his film career.

Yet McGann is hardly a celebrity actor; shunning interviews and making fairly rare appearances in public. That might explain why Club Geek Chic were able to wine and dine McGann in Lunya unmolested when discussing an In Conversation night recently.

We were surprised – and delighted – that they pulled it off. McGann will be talking about his career and selecting his favourite songs, put to music by some of Liverpool’s great and good, in February next year.

Previous subjects have included fellow Liverpudlian – and McGann’s mate – David Morrissey, Janice Long, Peter Serafinowicz and Mike McCartney, but McGann promises to be the msot intriguing of all due to his reticence to hog the limelight, as he acknowledges.

“I was thrilled to be asked to do February’s ‘In Conversation’. Then bashful terror set in until my mate David Morrissey calmed me down and assured me, having done it himself, that you can’t actually die from talking about your life and work in a beautiful room surrounded by friends and family and your favourite music. Guess I will just have to trust him!”

In Conversation with Paul McGann will take place in the plush surroundings of St George’s Hall Concert Room. Discussion of McGann’s life and career will be studded with clips and images and Paul’s five favourite songs will be played by different artists yet to be announced. A Q+A session will round off the night.

Now then: “In episode two of The Leisure Hive, how does K9 escape from….”
