You know we told you about the idiot in Playground who reportedly spent a million pounds (or whatever ridiculous figure was hungrily sucked up by the media) on Champagne? And you know how we said it was, in all likelihood, lies? And you know how Playground got all hissy, saying those who didn’t buy the story were, like, just jealous? (such a mature response, guys).

Well, seems like the story had as many air bubbles in it as a fine Bollinger (or as any given head on the dancefloor in the members only club) …Check out this, from The Guardian

“Alex Hope, a 23-year-old self-proclaimed currency trading “expert” who received a wave of publicity after reportedly buying a £125,000 bottle of champagne, is believed to have been arrested by City regulators investigating suspected unauthorised trading activities.

The precocious self-taught trader has sought considerable publicity… However a report in City AM said Hope’s publicist had confirmed the trader had been arrested.

Hope generated a blizzard of publicity last month after reputedly spending more than £200,000 on Britain’s most expensive round of drinks at a Liverpool nightclub. He is said to have spent £125,000 on a 99lb double-Nebuchadnezzar-sized bottle of Armand de Brignac champagne as well as further bottles of champagne and vodka.

A report in the Daily Mail suggested there had been “some scepticism about the receipt, which was released hours after the party”.”

It takes two to stoke up publicity of that magnitude. The playa and the playground. All of which is just a little bit seedy, really, isn’t it? And shows the club to have something creamy and damp on its face. And we don’t think it’s Krug.

Thanks to Thomas Ledson for the tip off.

Here’s Alex’s showreel (though what he’s showing off, we’re not exactly sure)
