Radar: Vic Godard and the Subway Sect

It's not just the relaunch of Erics that's bringing the spirit of 78 back again. The Williamson Tunnels sees legendary, 'lost' post-punk poet, Vic Godard back in town...

Who: Post punk pioneer, Vic Godard, with his Subway Sect, have had a turbulent career. Formed on the suggestion of Malcolm McLaren, the south London soul boys have etched out a sketchy songline of equal parts jazzy, funky and punky pub rock – touring with The Clash on their White Riot tour in 77.

They’re back – with a set of songs as spiky and politically fired up as ever. Recently releasing a set of songs originally destined for his 1978 debut, Godard’s proved that throwaway pop songs never die. They get better with age.

“We don’t do nostalgia shows,” he says. “They’re so dispiriting.” So expect your spirits to be well and truly lifted with Godard’s masterful blend: two parts punk attitude, one part pop sophistication.
