Ringo returns: Ringo Starr at the Empire

So, Ringo then eh? Penance served? Or do the flames of resentment still burn in Liverpool for his perceived Jonathan Ross slight, when wags in Liverpool responded by decapitating the drummer in a band or privet Beatles?

We shall see this weekend when Mr Starkey returns to Liverpool with his ‘All-Star’ band – geddit? – to the Liverpool Empire where we get to hear a variety of Beatles tracks, Ringo classics and covers.

It remains to be seen whether we’ll get some Thomas the Tank Engine narration, or even a reading from the script of That’ll Be The Day, where Ringo played a randy carnie.

Stuff like that reminds us that Starr has done a lot of good things over the years – and he was a really good drummer! – while the outcry over demolishing Madryn Street seems to suggest that there’s still a certain amount of goodwill towards the boy from the Dingle.

And, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to be able to say they saw a Beatle play live? If the worst comes to the worst you can always get those Rev Audrey books singed, eh?

These days, when I think of Ringo Starr I don’t think of his achievements with The Beatles. I think of him looking (and sounding) a complete tit at St George’s Hall in 2008, and I think of him telling his fans around the world – the ones that over the years have made him rich – that he’s too busy for autographs and fan mail.

I’ll be in town on Saturday, but I definitely won’t be going to see him, former Beatle or not

I’m with you on all of that, Robin. He’s kind of a caricature, a parody of what he thinks Ringo Starr is/should be. It’s not a good look.

I do wonder about the people who will, inevitably, pay through the nose to see him. In fact, it would be really interesting to hear from someone who is planning to go.
