The Weekly Seven: 4th March 2013

A cult movie classic for free, an incredible book/lamp, a new issue of a local magazine, intricate US indie-rock, and a carrot peeler. Stuff we approve of this week.

The Big Lebowski at The Shipping Forecast, 5th March

FILM Coen brothers’ brilliant classic The Big Lebowski – which flopped on release, but has since acquired a feverish cult appreciation – gets a screening at the Ship’s regular Secret Cinema Club on Tuesday. Free entry, with free popcorn. Who needs the Odeon? Fun fact: Knox Harrington, played by David Thewlis, is one of the very few Scouse accents in Hollywood movies. Facebook event

Lumio

PRODUCT There’s some fantastic stuff on Kickstarter, and this week the incredible Lumio caught our eye. A thing of real, simple practicality, this portable lamp transforms from a folded book into a fanned-out, lit up object of beauty. Stunning. More information

Maps & Atlases / Tall Ships at the Kazimier, 5th March

GIG Thumping, twiddly indie-rock beauty all evening at the Kaz on Tuesday: up-and-coming local chaps Ninetails open, before British math rock boys Tall Ships and virtuoso US guitar gang Maps & Atlases round things off. Recommended. Facebook event

Phoenix – Entertainment

TUNES Like the rush of a sudden Alpine avalanche comes this high octane trailblazer of track. As advance notice of the long-awaited new Phoenix album its is, by a French mile, the best song we’ve heard all year. In the past five years? Don’t bet against it.

Halcyon Issue 3

MAGAZINE It’s been a while, but the wait’s been worth it – that surefooted cocktail of sport, music, fashion and life – Halycon – is back with a belter of an issue. From fascinatingly honest interviews with Andrew Weatherall and Sugar Ray Leonard to, yeah, a jazzy socks fashion spread and warts and all tale of internet dating. It’s life. And it’s just how we know it. Excellent. www.halcyonmag.com

Karoto vegetable peeler

NICE THING Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. Fed up with boring old 50p peelers, product and interiors company Monkey Business are selling this newly-created peeler in the form of a big pencil sharpener. We want one. More information

The Mersey Belles

MUSIC The Mersey Belles, two lovely ladies, two ukuleles and a bag of new beats and tunes: the Mersey Belles give a good old wallop of 40′s Housewives Choice sheen to stuff like this Rhianna cover. And they’re on at Threshold Festival – another pick of the week – this Saturday.
