The Weekly Seven: 7 – 13 January

White whales, melting ice, crisp vinyl...As eclectic as ever, we give you our first Weekly Seven of 2013.

Ah, early January. The big gigs haven’t stared, Panto still clings onto our theatre stages. What to do to keep the January blues away? Well, there are a few things we could suggest…

WEBSITE: Gravity Glue (main pic)

AKA the man who hypnotises rocks, coaxes them into submission, to create gravity defying, teetering totems of rocks which are held together by nothing more than the forces of balance and an almost meditative patience. Bizarre and addictive. We’ve tried it. We’re walking with a bit of a limp. Read more…

BOOK: Mr Boston’s Bartender Guide

What’s in your new year’s resolution list? Ours is to get better at making a Tom Collins. Or a Kentucky Longshot. We’ve mastered the Old Fashioned, and positively own the Manhattan. This little book really is the bible of mixology – it’s been around since prohibition days, and is still the go to guide for the serious spirit synthesizers. Read more…

MUSIC: Fleetwood Mac Remaster

Don’t believe the hype (or should that be Haim?) this year, it’s all about the Fleetwood Mac. Get yourself a copy of the Steve Hoffman remaster (played at 45rmp for even purer fidelity) and wallow in that mid 70s sheen (there’s a 35th Anniversary 3CD box set out this month, too). So clear you can almost hear the white lines being tapped out on the mixing console. Read more…

FILM: Chasing Ice

Acclaimed environmental photographer James Balog’s hauntingly beautiful film is part meditation on the impermanence of things, part call to arms on disappearance of the world’s most fragile environment: the High Arctic. Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers – ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. A Sundance hit, and a rare showing this Thursday at New Brighton’s Light. A must see. Read more…

THEATRE: Big Wow

The kinetic marvel this is Big Wow return with their acclaimed The Art of Falling Apart to the Unity Theatre this week. Expect physical comedy with a whip smart edge, as the manic duo breathlessly take us on a journey into the unbearable madness of being. Hilarious and thought provoking (but mostly just hilarious). From Wednesday. Read more…
