Top Honour for Museum of Liverpool

It’s great to end a year of cultural cut backs and closures with a bit of good news. And well deserved news at that: The ace Museum of Liverpool has won Museum of the Year (2013) by the Council of Europe.

The aim of the prize is to encourage the contribution of museums to a greater understanding of the rich diversity of European Culture. The prize is determined by the Parliamentary Assembly’s Committee on Culture, Science and Education on the basis of recommendations made by the European Museum Forum. Liverpool’s Museum, which opened Phase Two almost a year ago, when The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited last December, has been one of the most successful cultural launches in recent British history: attracting 1.25 million visitors in its first year.

“The story of Liverpool is a fantastic one, with all its highs and lows,” says Dr David Fleming Director National Museums Liverpool. “Our aim was to create the best city museum in the world and this award gives us international acclaim’.

Phil Redmond, Chairman National Museums Liverpool, said: “This is deserved recognition not just for the Museum of Liverpool but for the city region. We consider the Museum of Liverpool to the best new museum anywhere in Europe. Our visitors also agree with more than 1.6 million people visiting since it opened in July 2011.”
