The Weekly Seven: 10th December 2012

A legendary South African artist, surfy slacker rock, a Christmas tree alternative, a 'slow journalism' magazine, NASA, and more. The stuff we approve of this week.

William Kentridge as Printmaker at the Bluecoat

EXHIBITION We love William Kentridge’s grainily gorgeous animations at Tate Liverpool’s new show. But his prints, in this new Bluecoat retrospective, are searingly impressive. Kentridge, South Africa’s most acclaimed multi-media artist, takes print to an entirely otherworldly dimension. Don’t miss this one. Until Feb 13. More information

Delayed Gratification Magazine

PUBLICATION A seasonal compendium of seriously good writing, addictively enjoyable infographics, and a sideways exploration of the zeitgeist. It is, by some margin, our new favourite magazine. And all the proof you need that print ain’t dead. And you can get it in the ever-excellent Cow & Co in town. More information

Christmas Shindig w/ Allah-Las at Leaf, 12th December

GIG It’s Christmas party season, and local promoters Harvest Sun are having theirs at Leaf with a bunch of bands. Obviously. The hotly tipped surfy shamble-pop gang Allah-Las headline, and Stealing Sheep labelmates Temples support. £6.50. More information

Spot The Station

THE SKY Yeah, the moon’s looked awesome of late, with Jupiter blazing out close by. But one of the brightest stars in the sky is actually the international space station: and you can spot it, if you know where to look. Check out this cool online navigation tool from NASA, and say hello to the spacemen.

Eternal Summers – Good As You

VIDEO Feeling the cold seep into your bones? Shimmering and sublime pop from Eternal Summers might be the tonic. They’ve released a new video from their Correct Behavior LP released this summer. Its gorgeous walls of reverb soaked guitar could carry us through to spring.

Extended Play at the Shipping Forecast, 13th December

CLUBNIGHT A big of a Belfast takeover at the Shipping Forecast this Thursday, as This Must Be Deep invite dance label Extended Play over for a night in the venue’s basement. Chris Hanna, T-Bone and Cromby (who has a residency at legendary Belfast venue The Stiff Kitten) all bring their body-shaking house music to town for a one-off extravaganza. More information

‘Branch’ wooden Christmas tree

OBJECT Forget about fighting over a bagged-up pine tree in some freezing cold garden centre in Birkenhead. This gorgeous, sustainably sourced Ash version is an ultra-minimal solution to the annual tree debacle. More information
