Radar: A Day of Pleasure at Playhouse Studio

While the Everyman continues to rise form the ashes at a pace, what feels like the theatre’s spiritual replacement – the Playhouse Studio attic space – is keeping occupied.

We can assume that everyone has just about recovered from the emotionally-draining The Matchbox (spare a thought for Leanne Best, we hope she had a lovely summer holiday); next up is a play performed by a man who acted in the first and last ever productions at the Everyman.

In fact Stuart Richman not only acted back in 1964 at the Everyman’s inaugural production, he actually helped in the construction of the set. We’re hoping he has the honour of treading the boards at the new Everyman too.

For now he’ll be performing in a one-man production at the Playhouse Studio; the world premiere of A Day of Pleasure, a new play adapted from Isaac Bashevis Singer’s award-winning book.

A tract on the peculiar mysteries and pleasures of growing up in 1930′s Warsaw, A Day of Pleasure is recounted by the author on the night before he goes to collect collect the Nobel Prize for Literature, as you do.

Previous experience of performances in the Playhouse Studio suggests that this should be an intimate and personal experience. That it will be performed by someone so entwined with Liverpool theater over the years is an a lovely bonus.
